Asian Qualification Tournament sees Saudi Arabia secure first ever women’s spot at Olympic Games

 

TAIAN, China (Mar 15, 2024) - The first day of the Asian Qualification Tournament in Tai’an, China saw five NOCs and the Refugee Team book their spots at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 with Saudi Arabia qualifying a place for a female athlete for the first time in Taekwondo history.

 

Dunya ali m Abutaleb made history for her country as she qualified in the W-49kg building on her success of winning bronze at the World Championships in Guadalajara in 2022.

 

Saudi Arabia was joined by Iran in qualifying in the W-49kg, while Thailand and the Refugee Team qualified in the M-68kg, Uzbekistan and Thailand qualified in the W-67kg and Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan qualified in the M-80kg.

Refugee athletes Wael Al Farraj (M-80kg) and Yehya Al Ghotani (M-68kg) from the Azraq Refugee Camp both competed in the Qualification Tournament but were unable to get past the first rounds.

 

More athletes will have the chance to qualify for Paris 2024 tomorrow when competitions in the W-57kg, W+67kg, M-58kg and M+80kg categories take place at the Taishan International Convention and Exhibition Center.
