First-ever Palestinian Athlete Qualifies for Olympic Taekwondo Competition

 

TAIAN, China (March 16, 2024) - A Palestinian has qualified to fight in Olympic Taekwondo competition for the first time.

 

Omar Yaser Ismail qualified on the second day of the Asian Qualification Tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. It is the first any Palestinian has qualified directly in any Olympic combat sport.

 

The Asian qualification competition, which ran over March 15-16, took place at the Taishan International Convention and Exhibition Center in Tai’an, China.  

 

In addition to Palestine, other NOCs that qualified today were China, Iran, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Lebanon and Tajikistan.

The next Taekwondo qualification tournament for Paris 2024 will be for the Oceania region, and will take place on April 6, in Honiara, Solomon Islands.
