Iran Grabs 2 Golds, 1 Silver on 3rd Day of 10th World Junior Taekwondo Championships

Iran showed its supremacy in taekwondo as it clinched two gold medals and one silver medal on the third day of the 10th World Junior Taekwondo Championships in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei on March 25, 2014.

 

The Great Britain came next with two golds and one bronze, followed by Korea with one gold, one silver and three bronzes. Italy won one gold medal.

 

The third-day competition, which takes place at the Taipei Arena in downtown Taipei City, featured six weight categories: the junior female 42kg, the junior female -52kg, the junior female -59kg, the junior male -45kg, the junior male -68kg and the junior male -78kg.

 

In the junior female -42kg weight division, the Great Britain's Abigail Stones needed a fourth golden-point round to earn her country the gold medal with a 6-6 regular three-round score against the Philippines' Irene Therese Bermejo. In the same category, Spain's Blanca Palmer and Korea's Jin-hee Jeon shared the bronze medal.

 

In the junior female -52kg weight category, Iran's Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin crushed Germany's Rhonda Nat 9-1 in the final match for the gold medal. The bronze went to the Great Britain's Leah Moorby and Korea's Soon-in Chae.

 

In the junior female -59kg weight division, the Great Britain's Lauren Williams defeated Korea's Hyeon-jeong Han 17-8 in the final round to grab the gold medal. China's Shu Hui Gao and Greece's Maria Moysidou shared the bronze medal in the same division.

 

In the junior male -45kg weight category, Iran's Mahdi Eshaghi defeated Russia's Vladislav Gaponyuk 12-4 in the final match to earn his country the gold medal.   In the division, the bronze went to Turkey's Onur Altan and Ukraine's Taras Malchenko.

 

In the junior male -68kg division, Italy's Davide Spinosa came from behind to beat Turkey's Emre Sayan 21-18 in the final match for the gold medal. The bronze went to Korea's Seung-gu Lee and Ukraine's Oleksiy Zyablytsev in the weight division.

 

In the junior male -78kg category, Korea's Gil-young Byeon easily defeated his final-match opponent, Iran's Amir Hossein Omidi, 13-5 to earn his country the gold medal. The United States' Jonathan Healy and France's Yoann Miangue shared the bronze medal in the same weight division.

 

The fourth and final day of the championships on March 2 will feature four weight categories: the junior male -59kg, the junior male -63kg, the junior female -46kg and the junior female -55kg.
