Spain and Russia Clinch 1 Gold Medal each on Final Day of 2014 World Taekwondo Grand Prix Series 2 in Astana, Kazakhstan

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (August 31, 2014) - Spain and Russia took one gold medal each on the third and final day of the 2014 World Taekwondo Grand Prix Series 2 in Astana, Kazakhstan on Aug. 31, 2014.

 

Spain's Eva Calvo Gomez needed a fourth golden-point round to earn her country the gold medal in the women's -57kg weight category.

 

Calvo Gomez, No. 2 on the WTF Olympic ranking, was tied at 1-1 with her final-match opponent, Jade Jones of Great Britain, the No. 1 on the WTF Olympic ranking, at the end of the third round. In the golden-point round, the Spaniard scored the first point for the gold medal and a prize money of $5,000.

 

In the female division, Korea's So-hee Kim and Sweden's Nikita Glasnovic had to settle for the bronze medal.

 

In the men's -68kg weight division, Russia's Alexey Denisenko, who ranked third on the WTF Olympic ranking, needed only two rounds to clinch the gold medal as he won the final match with a 13-0 point-gap victory against the United States' Mark Lopez, who stood at 22nd on the WTF Olympic ranking.

 

The bronze medal went to Spain's Jose Antonio Rosillo Atencia and Iran's Behnam Asbaghikhanghah in the same male division.

 

A total of 206 athletes from 50 countries competed at the Sport Center Daulet for top honors in the Astana Grand Prix event. All semifinal and final matches were broadcast live by the Kaz Sport television during the three-day Astana Grand Prix event.

 

The next 2014 World Taekwondo Grand Prix Series, the third of its kind, is scheduled for Oct. 24-26, 2014 in Manchester, Great Britain.
