World Taekwondo holds virtual meeting of Continental Unions

 

SEOUL, Korea (November 9, 2020) - World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue today held a virtual meeting of its Continental Unions to provide a number of key updates and discuss key topics, including continental Olympic qualification and good governance.

 

President Choue said:

 

“It is vital that World Taekwondo remains in regular contact with the Continental Unions as they play a critical role in helping to lead our sport forward. Today’s meeting was important in discussing the latest updates and ensuring that there is alignment in our plans for the future. We always welcome the input of the Continental Unions are we are focused on working with them so that we can deliver the best support for our global taekwondo family.”

 

Africa, Pan America and Oceania have completed their Olympic qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games; however, Asia and Europe have not yet been able to host their Continental Qualification Tournaments. President Choue explained that the intention is to have both events staged before May 2021 and that their timing will be coordinated with the IOC.

 

  President Choue also reiterated World Taekwondo’s commitment to good    governance and making further improvements to ensure the federation is upholding the highest standards for the sport and   its members.

 The President identified closer collaboration with the Continental Unions, including the implementation of model Continental Union statutes and other polices, as a key area of enhancing good governance. The President also stressed the importance of strengthening the monitoring and auditing processes for the distribution of development funds and a presentation was delivered on how this can be improved.

 

 

  President Choue provided an update on the activities that have taken place since the last Council meeting, including the relocation of the World Taekwondo headquarters to Goyang City and preparations for this month’s first ever Online World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships.

 

  The virtual WT Extraordinary Council Meeting will be held on November 24, 2020.
