SEOUL, Korea (July 23, 2020) - World Taekwondo today joined its athletes around the world in celebrating one-year-to-go to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and reinforcing the message #StrongerTogether.

The Games had originally been scheduled to get underway tomorrow; however, the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic saw the postponement of the event by one year, with the opening now due on 23 July 2021.

World Taekwondo marked the occasion by sharing an ‘Athlete Focus’ video that showcases the excellence of taekwondo’s Olympic athletes and serves as a reminder of the moments of emotion and elation that they produce.

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue said:

“Today we honor all our athletes who have dedicated their lives to taekwondo and inspired us with their resilience in adapting to the current situation after having had their Olympic dreams put on hold for a year.

“As the IOC has made clear, we are #StrongerTogether and the preparations for the Games will showcase the importance of everyone in the Olympic Family working in solidarity. Tokyo 2020 is a symbol of hope for us all and light at the end of the tunnel. We hope that it will be a key moment in the world’s recovery and will serve as a celebration of peace and humanity.”
