Prince William and Kate Middleton will tie the knot at Westminster Abbey in London on Friday, April 29th, which has been designated an official public holiday. Among the many special concessions for this day to cheer us all up will be allowing pubs and clubs to sell alcohol and play live or recorded music, dancing, plays and films, until 1 am on April 29th and 30th. The only fly in the ointment is the possibility that London Underground drivers could strike on the day in a row over bank holiday pay.London Underground has accused ASLEF of ignoring long standing agreements on pay and annual leave while the union has demanded triple pay and a day off in lieu for working on bank holidays.
ASLEF already took action on Boxing Day, causing disruption on one of the busiest shopping days of the year, so getting to the ceremony on time might be tricky using public transport. Those transport networks that are open will be clogged, so it might be a better idea to hire a car for large groups of relatives if you want to have a chance of seeing the happy couple. Approaching a friend with a large people carrier on a copious estate to ask if you can borrow their car to transport aunties and uncles may test friendships, but it’s certainly easier on the wallet and less hassle that hiring. Temporary car insurance will reassure them that their motor is covered, thus making it more likely that they’ll agree to lend it or share it in the first place.
If relatives need to get mobile during their stay for the royal event and all the tubes are shut down, you can facilitate in law roaming by lending them your car. Taking out short term car insurance means you can reassure the in laws that driving the borrowed vehicle will not risk their (or your) existing no-claims bonus.Hint that the offer of reimbursing petrol money would not go amiss. If you work things right, you could more than cover the cost of one day car insurance and whatever royal wedding trinkets, keepsakes and souvenir tea towels are purchased along the way!
